25 Mar 2019 - Down Day, Reconnect with DeWitt Classmate, Commissary & NEX Run

25 Mar 2019
This morning we took care of some remedial tasks around the RV.  I explained previously about the issues we had with our credit card supposedly being compromised and our bank issuing us a set of replacements.  We decided then to get a separate set of cards just for travel.  That way we would not be out in the middle of nowhere without at least one working card.

Well, the bank two-day expedited the shipment and the last one arrived here today  Thankfully we had a address to which the bank could send them.  A classmate of mine from DeWitt IA lives here and we planned to try to get together anyway.  Her name is Barb Wise and she was kind enough to let me have the packages sent to her house.
Barb's father owned the Majestic Theater in DeWitt where we used to go see movies. The old theater closed for a while and is now the Operahouse.  I have not been inside the Operahouse, but I remember it as the Majestic with the old carbon-arc film projector and a balcony which was always roped off.  I was pretty young back then and only heard stories about what transpired  in the balcony!!

I left DeWitt right after my freshman high school year when my dad was promoted in the Iowa State Patrol to Captain and transferred to Cedar Falls IA.  I lost touch with most of my DeWitt classmates after that.  It was not until social media, i.e. Facebook that we slowly started to reconnect with my DeWitt buds and eventually Barb and I reconnected.  She had become a flight attendant and eventually settled in San Diego.  Our trip this year was a great opportunity to reconnect with her.

So this morning Barb let me know the credit cards arrived and we made arrangements to meet not far from our RV Park for the hand-off.  I introduced her to Doreen and as Barb was on her way to an appointment this afternoon, our visit was fairly short. We have not seen each other since our freshman high school year  (1970), so it's been 49 years!  We have a lot of catching up to do! Hopefully later in the week we can get together again.

On the way to meet up with Barb we took the scenic route and Doreen quickly pointed out one of the street signs!
After saying goodbye to Barb, Doreen and I headed to the San Diego Naval Base to visit the commissary and Naval Exchange (NEX) to restock supplies.  Near the NEX is a Military Welfare and Recreation (MWR) ticket office.  They sell discounted tickets to local events and venues.  We were able to pick up tickets to visit the USS Midway aircraft carrier at a substantially reduced rate.  We plan to visit there tomorrow, since Thursday we will be at the ballgame.

That's it for today.
