13 Mar 2019 - Cubs vs the A's at Hohokam Field

13 Mar 2019

Spring Training game 3 of 4.  We are traveling to Hohokam Field today to watch the Chicago Cubs play the Oakland Athletics, better known as the A's.  The game started at 1:05 pm so we departed early to take Liberty to doggie daycare.

As explained yesterday, Hohokam Field used to be the Spring Training home of the Chicago Cubs.  The Cubs built a new stadium, Sloan Park, and they sold Hohokam to the A's.  It was as we remembered, though.  Not much has changed.  We even parked in the same grassy field that we parked in back in 2013.

Baseball fans lined up at Gate D

Gates opened two hours prior to the game, and we processed through security.  Around the inside of the stadium, we found the team store and Doreen got her MLB Stadium Passport stamped.  Then we headed down third base side and outside.  There were many food and drink vendors there and a tent advertising doggie day care!  That of course caught our eye so we stopped to talk with them.

One of the users was kind enough to take our picture near home plate

The Cubs dugout minus the Cubs!  They arrive in a bus and have not showed yet.

A line of fans on the third base side near the dugout, hoping to catch an autograph as the Cubs walk by.

Around right field there is a large lounge area with food and drink.

A view from our seats today.  Again, great seats between home and third base directly behind the visitor's (Cubs) dugout.

A few seats starting to fill.  Hohokam has less capacity than Sloan Park.

The sun peaked out between the clouds all afternoon.  It was warm but windy.  I exited the park momentarily and took our jackets out to the truck.  The game was fun to watch with many of the Cub's starters in the lineup.  Lester has a lackluster start. Several Cubs went yard including Rizzo.  We had a couple pick-offs and a close snap through from Contreras to Rizzo.  Oakland pulled it off winning 12-11.  It was a hitters game with 23 runs on 28 total hits and only 3 errors.

Tomorrow we attend our last Spring Training game at 1:05 pm back at Sloan Park where the Cubs host the Texas Rangers.  Liberty will again go to doggie daycare, but it is spa day for her as she will get a shampoo and hair cut plus nails trimmed too!
