8 Dec 2018 - Rain, Rain, Go Away!

8 Dec 2018

Doreen after pee'ing the dog.
Has rained most of the day.  Lighter this morning, heavier this afternoon and evening.  They forecast about 2.5" of rain here.  We stayed put today since I am trying to get this respiratory infection under control.  Between the injections yesterday and the meds today we are making progress, thankfully.

Water running down the street here in the campground.

After having visited the Talladega Super Speedway we both thought it would be only fitting to watch the 'Talladega Nights' movie, so we rented it for $3.99 and streamed it.  Funny show.  We recognized many aspects of the Speedway shown in the movie.  After the movie was over we were cruising Directv guide trying to figure out what to watch next and Doreen stumbled onto the same movie for free on one of the DTV channels.  Who da thunk!

We watched the Army-Navy game and I worked the laptop doing some file clean-up, Windows updates, etc  We also spent some time with the route for tomorrow (Monday) from here to Maxwell Air Force Base FamCamp Montgomery AL, our next stop.  It will be a very light day since it is only about 75 miles down there.  We would have bypassed Birmingham all together but they had no availability at Maxwell this weekend,  It worked out fine since we were able to see a few things here and also had a couple down days since I was not feeling the best.

Tomorrow we will bug out about 1100 hrs.  It's only about 76 miles down to Maxwell AFB.  Check-in should be about noon at Maxwell FamCamp, we will verify tomorrow morning.  Sunday on Maxwell should lend itself well to maneuvering the RV through the base.  The FamCamp is clear on the other side of the runway so we have to drive all the way through the base to get there.

Our stay at Montgomery AL is 9-17 December, so we have plenty of time to see the sites in the area.  Maxwell has a full sized commissary and base exchange.  Gunter Air Force Base is on the east side of Montgomery and is where the Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy is as well as the First Sergeant Academy and the Enlisted Heritage Hall.  I used to come down here frequently for training and to attend graduations of our Airmen.  At part of my retirement, the Headquarters staff at Camp Dodge bought me a brick at the Enlisted Heritage Hall.  Airmen that have attended the Academy since I retired have sent me pictures of it, but I want to see it in person.

There are many other sites in the Montgomery area we want to see to include Civil Rights Memorial Center, Rosa Parks Museum, The White House of the Confederacy, Dexter Ave Memorial Church where Dr Martin Luther King was pastor and Nat King Cole's birthplace.  Within driving distance is Selma AL which has a history during the civil rights movement.  Also an Air Force comrade we were stationed at Maine lives in the Atlanta GA area and we may try to meet half way since we had to change our plans of camping near them.

Next report from Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery AL!
