24 Feb 2019 - Arrived at San Angelo TX!

24 Feb 2019
58F and windy this morning, and warmed as the day went on.  At 0909 hrs we departed Ft Sam Houston RV Park in San Antonio and headed towards our next destination, San Angelo TX.  There is not a whole lot to see in between.  It was pretty barren, but as we moved north it became clear why they call this 'Texas hill country'. It was really nice territory!

We try to maintain 60 mph max pulling the fifth wheel.  They were shooting around us like we were standing still!

Between the hills and the head wind, our fuel mileage took a hit, but it was a sunny day and, unlike Iowa, it was not snowing and blowing, so we enjoyed the drive and pulled into the San Angelo KOA Campground 4 hours 56 minutes later at 1405 hrs.  Overall the trip was 231 miles.

I was never a big fan of KOA Campgrounds, but they do a great job of catering to their customers.  We were treated like royalty from the time we drove in .  I like the fact that they 'escort' you to your campsite via golf cart, and explain the utility connections (not that we need that).  Later they came to our site with the cart, picked up a propane tank, took it to their fill station to top it off and returned.

The site we were assigned is a pull-through, 50 amp full hook-up.  Most or the area was gravel, but there is a large grassy park across the street for Liberty.  One thing we have here that I don't remember seeing before is a privacy fence.  It is not huge, but it really helps provide a little separation between camp sites.

After setting up we took a little break outside in the sun and then took Liberty for a walk about the park.  This is not a huge KOA but it is very nice.  We will only be here two nights.

Tomorrow we plan to visit Goodfellow Air Force Base where our firefighters are trained.  We will also visit Ft Concho, a bordello museum (!) and ........ (drum roll)...... Yes, another telephone museum!!!!! Yes!
