This morning we pulled chocks at 0813 hrs and departed Llano Grande Resort heading towards San Antonio, our 14th stop of this trip. The 261 mile drive was uneventful and the scenery a bit barren. Lots of brush, cactus and small trees.
Border patrol was pretty busy along the way. One one occasion they had a whole group sopped and lined up outside. We saw many border patrol and sheriff's department vehicles running up and down the highway all morning.
We had a stop at the inspection station, lining up with the other over sized vehicles, but passed through there quickly without issues.
We noticed the northbound shoulder was labeled Hurricane "Evac Lane" and from the map it appeared our highway would have been a primary route of evacuation for many along the Gulf Coast
San Antonio arrived before we knew it and we made our way to Fort Sam Houston's RV Park. The sun was out and very, very welcome!!
Arrival time was 1312 hrs so the drive, including one stop, was five hours. It is a beautiful facility with 74 RV sites, all with full hookup 50 amp for a mere $20 per night! These military campgrounds are quite a privilege that we really enjoy. At Fort Sam Houston, the roads are paved, sites are paved with a large paved patio area, barbecue grill and picnic table. The sites are widely spaced with green grass in between which Liberty will love. On-site laundry not far from us includes multiple washers and dryers for $1.50 per load. We don't use the latrine and shower facilities because ours in the RV is nice and convenient, but they are surely as nice as everything else.
Lots of space |
The US Flag and our Air Force Flag proudly displayed on this Army facility LOL! |
Wide, paved streets |
A unique horse trailer/RV, known as a living quarter horse trailer or an equine RV. Room for the horse and the owner! |
Tomorrow we will travel downtown to the Historic Market Square to have lunch with Command Sergeant Major (ret) Frank Leota!
Frank was my Army counterpart at Kirkuk Air Base in Iraq. I have not seen him since I left FOB Warrior (Kirkuk) in January 2007.
