No touring today. The things we want to see on South Padre Island are closed on the weekends, so we will go there tomorrow. Today was kind of a wind-down day from the weekend and anniversary celebration. We had made plans to have lunch with Karen and Jim. They took us to a local barbecue spot called The Smoking Oak in Mercedes TX.
The Smoking Oak was "the Winner of the Best 50 Bar-B-Que Restaurants in Texas" as selected by the Texas Monthly Magazine of 2017.
The food was fantastic. Doreen had chicken and there was enough for three people! I had brisket and sausage. A variety of sides were offered to go along with their tasty meat.
After lunch we came back and Doreen knocked out the laundry and I worked on a few things around here including some advanced planning for our move to San Antonio on Wednesday. At one of the laundry facilities was one of their swimming pools and a bunch of shuffle board courts, so plenty to do while your laundry is drying!
The time is really clicking along. Our primary objective for this trip was to attend my sister's 50th wedding anniversary, and we are here and have done that. It seems like we just got here and it is nearly time to move on already. The weather has really improved from what we experienced down the Gulf Coast and really since we launched on this trip. We can only hope this trend continues as we push west towards the coast.
We have a lot of folks yet to see on this trip, primarily military comrades and other friends, one classmate from DeWitt! We have a lot of sites to see too.
We are at stop 13 of 31 on this trip. So far we've had a few longer stops, such as 16 nights in Pensacola and 16 nights in Corpus Christi, but now on the stops will be much shorter for the most part. We have 9 nights in Mesa/Apache Junction AZ, 10 nights in San Diego, 15 at Seal Beach near Los Angeles, but other than that most of the stops are just a few nights. So we will have to be deliberate about selecting the sites to see and planning our touring. Life's a journey and we are trying to make the most of it. No matter where you hang your spurs, there is something to see. So get out there and enjoy this great USA!
