8 Jan 2019 - New Orleans Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour

8 Jan 2019
Beautiful day today with highs in the 70's.  We are still running a heater at night and will continue to with night time temps hovering around 40F.  We started the morning at the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) office right when they opened.  They gave us quite a few brochures and a little info on routes, etc but the contacts for all of the companies they represent with discounts are being renegotiated, so they could not provide any discounted tickets.

We then headed down to the Algiers ferry.  The roads leading to the ferry are very narrow with vehicles parked on both sides.  There were several areas where there were literally inches on each side of our truck.   Needless to say, we will be finding an alternate route for tomorrow!

$2.00 each for the ferry ride over to the French Quarter was very reasonable.  It's a quick ride across the mighty and muddy Mississippi.

Once there we made our way to Hop-on Hop-off stop #7 and were soon greeted by one of their representatives.
We bought a three day pass so we could go all the way around today to see all the sights, and then the next couple days we will "hop off" at various sites.
We started at Stop #7 on the map above.  The buses are open-top and by the time we "hopped on" the top was full so we were down inside and I could not get many pictures.  Once we got to the World War II Museum quite a few got off, so we were able to move upstairs.  Here are a few pictures:
The old Superdome, a huge player during Katrina.

Wrought iron balcony's everywhere
Beads hanging from the utility lines and trees everywhere
One of the trolleys
Entrance to Mardi Gras World, where the floats are built and stored.  We will be back to tour this facility

Some of the floats inside the building

Looking forward to touring this building
Voodoo and New Orleans are synonymous.

We passed the Marine Corps band playing here in celebration of the Battle of New Orleans 8 Jan 1815

Wrought iron balconies everywhere

A cemetery in downtown New Orleans.  Buried above ground.
We "hopped off" the bus and walked up Canal Street until we got to Bourbon Street.
The famous Bourbon Street.

A view down Bourbon Street

We made a quick stop in an Irish Pub to use the facilities and have a beverage.  We could not stay long, though as we needed to get back to the ferry landing in time for the next one.  They operate every 30 minutes.
Beautiful woodwork on the bar

That about wraps it up for today.  We hit our limit for Liberty's bladder so we needed to get back to the RV.  It's a little over a 30 minute drive from the ferry terminal to the RV.

Tomorrow we plan to use the Hop-on Hop-off to get to the National World War II Museum and that will be the focus for the day.  If we need more time there we will come back the day after.  Doreen found a couple lighthouses down here so we will do those this weekend.  Apparently there is a significant football game here in town this weekend and those we talked to said to avoid the downtown area as much as possible as it will be a zoo!

How cool to be in Mardi Grasa....do they have bourbon on Bourbon street?! Looks like the super dome is huge... stay away for the football game this weekend. Have fun!

We walked Bourbon Street but will spend some time there tomorrow. Yes, we are going to avoid the downtown area this weekend with the ball game there
