17 Jan 2019 - Arrived at College Station TX - Aggie Country!

17 Jan 2019

Departed Westlake Louisiana this morning at 0811 hrs westbound on I-10 towards Texas.  Very overcast with drizzle but the further west we traveled the more the sun tried to peek through the clouds. At least it was fairly warm in the 50's.

Rain obscured the picture of the 'Welcome to Texas' sign, but Doreen got one of the state line.  College Station is north and west of Houston and after talking with the camp host at Westlake we decided to take I-10 through Houston and then I-610 / Hwy 210 / Hwy 6 northwest to College Station.   Traffic was kind of nuts-o through Houston but by 1238 hrs  we had traveled 240 miles with one stop and arrived at College Station.  We made our way to the campground and in-check was painless.  We set-up the RV quickly, almost like we had done it before.
Fairly new campground with tiny trees

Gravel pads but spaced pretty well apart

We ate a late lunch here and then ventured out later for a late dinner at Outback Steak House.  Bad move.  We should have gone to Whataburger!  Service was poor, food was mostly adequate, draft beers X 2 were very flat so I finally just ordered a bottle.  Ultra slow service resulted in an ultra small tip!

Tomorrow we are going to reconnect with one of our retired military comrades and friend Brigadier General Drew DeHaes and his wife Dorothy.  Brig Gen DeHaes served as our Iowa Assistant Adjutant General Air and as our 132d Fighter Wing commander in Des Moines.  I served with then Col DeHaes as his Wing Command Chief and then we both served together at Iowa Joint Forces Headquarters where I was the State Command Chief.

Upon his military retirement, he and his wife Dorothy moved back to Texas and settled in College Station where he is a commercial pilot.  They are both graduates of Texas A&M as is their youngest daughter Haley - a family of Aggies!  Tomorrow we will tour Texas A&M with them and then head back to their house for a barbecue dinner!  We are looking forward to seeing them again!
